Despite the high number of technology consultants in large cities like Atlanta, many companies still struggle to find the right resources to execute key initiatives. The problem, many CIOs contend, is that while there are many talented programmers, there are far fewer who can also act in an advisory role and help companies from a strategic perspective.

“There are many people out there who aren’t about creating a solution,” says John Ellingson, Chief Strategy Officer of VuBotics. “They more or less do exactly what they’re told.”   

VuBotics is an Atlanta-based company that produces an application designed to make reading online less stressful. They were looking for basic BlackBerry programming support when they contacted Primus Software, an IT services and solutions company, who helped them identify Simplified Technology Solutions (STS). VuBotics initially assumed the project would be limited to simple functionality updates. But as they worked with STS’s Ed Lineberry, he helped them realize there were core platform issues that needed to be addressed if they wanted to meet their long-term goals. 

“We were tacking functionality onto a weak infrastructure,” says Ellingson, “which made it difficult to build things without creating other problems.” Lineberry was able to tackle short-term fixes, as well as help them understand what strategic decisions to consider. 

“When I talk to clients, it’s important that I know what functionality they have and what they think they need,” says Lineberry. “That way, I can help them understand the consequences of their decisions. With VuBotics, the product was good but it was not in a position to grow without some changes.”

VuBotics eventually did decide to address these issues. “As we looked at who could help us with infrastructure and direction, Ed rose to the top of that list,” says Ellingson. In fact, Ellingson credits Lineberry with VuBotics’ ability to shift from a production mentality to a sales mentality. “Ed has been instrumental to the commercialization effort,” he says.
